Wall Street’s major indexes began the new year at record levels on Thursday, as fresh stimulus from Beijing to prop up its slowing economy added to optimism fueled by easing trade tensions and an improving global outlook.
The dollar recovered from a six-month low to add 0.44% on Thursday, the first trading day of 2020, ending a four-day losing streak and a downbeat December that had left the index virtually flat at the end of 2019.

(Bloomberg) — Duke Energy Corp. reached a settlement with state regulators that will cut $1.5 billion from its cost to clean up coal ash ponds in North Carolina.The deal announced Thursday ends a legal dispute with the state, which in April ordered the utility to excavate nine ponds.
