The market can be a humbling force for any investor, financial analyst or writer. It often runs in the opposite direction than we predict, mocking our best judgment in the process.

Can This 9.9% Yield Keep Up Its Tradition?

My teenage daughter embarrasses easily. If I’m talking too loudly, gesturing a little too dramatically or… breathing, she wants to crawl under a rock.
Like many girls her age, she spends most of her time in her room.
So I was pleasantly surprised last week when she announced that she wanted to watch the Macy’s (NYSE: M) Thanksgiving Day Parade together like we have every year since she was very little.
The parade has been held in New York City every year since 1924, and we’ve been watching it curled up on the couch since she was 4.

The justices heard an hour of arguments in Intel’s appeal of a lower court ruling reviving the proposed class action lawsuit that a judge decided in 2017 had been filed too late. The case is significant for companies because it could expand the time that many plan beneficiaries have to bring lawsuits, which could lead to higher damages. …read more […]

The Five Metrics Startup Investors Are Most Likely to Get Wrong

My Twitter feed is always good for a laugh or two every morning. This morning was no different.
“You need to be able to say what your startup does in 2-4 words,” tweeted serial founder David Sacks. “No one has the time or attention span for an elevator pitch anymore.”
I guess Sacks is a very busy guy.
But we’re all busy, right? Heaven forbid a founder should dare to waste my time by taking up more than the requisite five seconds Sacks deigns to give to startup entrepreneurs.
I’m all for efficiency. But some things shouldn’t be rushed. Understanding a founder’s value proposition …read more […]

NEW YORK/RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec 4 (Reuters) – Brazilian state-run oil firm Petrobras expects to boost its equity value by roughly 45% by 2021, in large part through cost cuts and the divestment of non-core assets, it said in a presentation released on Wednesday.
