Economic Inequality: Loving the Poor… or Hating the Rich?

Economic inequality is a hot-button issue, especially when so many highly educated people are living paycheck to paycheck.
Today, Alexander Green begins to clear up some common misconceptions and set you on the path toward wealth creation.

In this series, I intend to show readers how to end economic inequality. Or, at least, the only kind they can do something about.
Not the gulf between the rich and the poor, but the one between your current net worth and the one you’d like to have.
Narrow that and you’ll be moving toward your most important financial goals – and lessening economic disparity in the …read more […]

Mailbag: Don’t Take This Wall Street Investing Maxim as Gospel

Q: This sounds silly, but I just don’t know how you invest in what you know while still exploring new sectors?
A: Investing in what you know is a sound piece of advice as long as you don’t take it too seriously. I’m speaking from my own experience. For a long time, I treated it as gospel. Investing is hard and risky. Surely the more you know, the better your chance of picking a winner?
It’s a convincing argument. If you’ve lived in New York City your entire life and you like making real estate investments, are you better off investing in …read more […]

The Top 3 Airline ETFs to Watch

There are plenty of reasons to invest in airline ETFs. The airline industry is relatively undervalued, and with more people flying than ever before, the potential for growth is huge.
Roughly 44,000 flights take off every day in the U.S. And last year, U.S. airports serviced around 1 billion passengers. Internationally, that number is closer to 4 billion. With fares becoming more affordable, airlines are serving more passengers and posting bigger profits
The International Air Transport Association estimates the airline industry will net $35.5 billion in profit this year. They also project the number of passengers will increase to 8.2 billion by …read more […]

How Using Options Predicts Profits – Part 2

In yesterday’s Trade of the Day, we focused on how to calculate the move expected in a stock after its company releases earnings.
Here’s a refresher:
Take a look at the stock price and choose the options that have the closest expiration and the closest strike price to where the stock is trading. Do that for both put and call options.
Then add up the price of the put and the call, and divide that number by the current share price. That gives you a percentage approximating the move expected by the market.
As an example, take stock “X”…
Assume the shares for stock …read more […]

Become the Shark… or Be Its Prey

Transcript

It’s time for a quarterly update on how badly people are doing saving for retirement. But I am shifting gears this quarter…
Rather than pointing out the shortcomings that we all know are part of our retirement situation, I’m going on the offensive and trying a different tactic… and having some fun while I’m at it.
Maybe you have seen the news stories about the increase in the number of great white sharks off Cape Cod. It seems an explosion in the seal population – the great white’s favorite meal – has been driving the number of big feeders and causing havoc …read more […]

Are Passive Funds a Threat to the Market?

Dr. Michael Burry made a fortune shorting the real estate bubble in 2008. His bets against the subprime mortgage market were made famous in The Big Short, a bestselling book by Michael Lewis, which was later turned into a Hollywood movie starring Brad Pitt and Steve Carell.
Now Burry’s warning about another crash, which he says will be triggered by the rise of passive investing (buying very broad stock indexes like the S&P 500).
Passive index funds, led by the S&P 500 or the Russell 2000, now make up 45% of U.S. stock funds according to Morningstar via CNBC.

The other 55%, actively …read more […]

The End of Wealth Inequality… Starting Today

Economic inequality is a hot-button issue, especially when so many highly educated people are living paycheck to paycheck.
Today, Alexander Green begins to clear up some common misconceptions and sets you on the path toward wealth creation.

Judging by my mailbag, last week’s column on economic inequality struck a chord with many readers – and a nerve with others.
I get that. How wealth is distributed in this country is a controversial subject – and a political hot potato.
Over the course of the next few columns, I’m going to clear up a few misperceptions on the matter.
Then I intend to embark on an …read more […]

Europe Is on Sale

European currencies and markets are on sale – and they might get a lot cheaper in a couple of months.
This could be a generational opportunity. If you position yourself to take advantage of it now, you might score some huge bargains.
Between now and the end of November, there could be a lot of turmoil in European markets…
That’s because, on October 31, the United Kingdom will decide whether it will leave the European Union with or without an agreement on issues ranging from trade to immigration.
A “hard Brexit” (leaving without an agreement) is the likely scenario. But there is also a …read more […]

How Options Can Be Used to Predict Profits in the Stock Market

The stock market presents traders with opportunities every day.
Some are more obvious than others, as press releases can put the spotlight on certain stocks and impact shares before or after the market is open.
Of course, news is also released during the day. But unless you are glued to a screen and have a quick-trigger finger, you will most likely miss out on any significant moves the news creates.
Some market participants can move in milliseconds… so even if you’re able to act in seconds, you’ll be far behind.
We live in an age of lightning-fast connections and machine technology that trades using …read more […]

Marijuana Policy Project Director on Prohibition vs. Regulation

Despite the fact that legalization is spreading across the U.S., a surprising trend has taken root…
We’re actually seeing an increase in marijuana-related arrests.
And even though gritty crime dramas on TV might suggest otherwise, the majority of these arrests aren’t for “kingpins” or illicit drug dealers. They’re for simple possession.
Roughly 90% of all cannabis arrests are for possession. In fact, someone is arrested on a marijuana-related charge every 48 seconds in this country.
Since 1995, the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) has been at the forefront of changing marijuana laws in the U.S. The organization is in the business of seeing cannabis prohibition …read more […]

The Single Most Important Quality of Successful Investors

Many investors spend years studying modern financial theory and Nobel Prize-winning investment strategies in an attempt to become more successful.
Today, Nicholas Vardy explains why the true secret to wealth is more psychological.

When I started my career in investing, I thought the key to becoming a great investor was to study modern financial theory.
After all, this was how academics like Harry Markowitz of the University of Chicago and William Sharpe of Stanford had won Nobel Prizes in economics.
Later, I decided to study the beliefs, habits and strategies of the world’s greatest investors.
I spent thousands of dollars with one of the world’s …read more […]

Is There Any Pattern to Bitcoin Price?

If you’re an investor, you’ve heard of Bitcoin before. There’s no ignoring it. Bitcoin has been hot news in the investing community for years, and has even garnered interest from the tech community for the blockchain technology it’s built on. Anytime it’s in the news, it commands major headlines—usually when they’re focused on Bitcoin price.
The price of Bitcoin can be described in one word: Volatile. It has a tendency to fluctuate dramatically depending on many variables—namely the stability (or instability) of other markets. Because it tends to be a reactionary currency, many people have tried to predict what it’s going …read more […]

3 Dividend Payers Immune to a Trade War

It seems that nearly every day the stock market is reacting to tweets or news about the trade war.
Whether it’s responding to made-up stories about China placing a couple of phone calls, real negotiations or breakdowns in talks, the market’s reactions to trade-related events have been strong.
Considering the world is more connected than ever, it’s hard to find stocks that shouldn’t be badly affected by a trade war or tariffs.
However, today I have three all-American, relatively tariff-proof companies for you that have safe and solid dividend yields.
All-American Dividend Champion No. 1: AT&T
