Halloween scare: Party City plunges after slashing annual targets again

The retailer, which sells decorated party goods such as balloons and costumes in the United States, said sales of Halloween party supplies in the third quarter, including October, fell 3.2% from a year earlier. “We are carefully analyzing our Halloween results and addressing the underlying issues and opportunities we have identified to improve the business going forward,” Chief Executive Officer James Harrison said in a statement. Ralph Lauren profit gets boost from Chinese demand; shares rise 14%

Ralph Lauren, like other high-end fashion companies from New York, Paris and Milan, has been expanding in China, where a weakening yuan currency has pushed more wealthy domestic consumers to splurge at home rather than while travelling abroad. Chief Financial Officer Jane Nielsen said on a post-earnings call that revenue from Asia, which rose 4%, was driven by the company’s online business expansion, store openings and marketing initiatives featuring local celebrities.
